Brian Eno

On not having to work, Ipswich Art School and Nietzschean play.

Eno has grown on me over the years, and I enjoyed a lot of this, especially his wholly positive memory on not having to work back in the 60s and 70s (something MES appreciated, as well as Jah Wobble).

The art school he’s referring to is Ipswich’s (a gallery now), which sits in an odd nook of the town, between the museum and a nice pub. Maggi Hambling went there before moving on to Camberwell. Art Schools have, inevitably, closed their doors over the last 30 years or so – more civic cultural vandalism.

The rediscovering the seriousness of kids at play is from Nietzsche:

Man’s maturity: to have regained the seriousness that he had as a child at play.
